I often try to paint the standard or classical subject matter of painting: Flowers in front of a mirror, a bowl of fruit on a table, a still life – not because I want to paint such things, but because they are the hardest subjects to make your own or put a unique personal stamp on. I want to challenge the age-old historical conceptions of such imagery. But whether I can really do that I don’t know.
